WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Catholic football team returned home for the first time since week one on Saturday afternoon to take on sixth-ranked Salisbury at Cardinal Stadium. The Seagulls got off to a hot start, scoring 21 points in the opening quarter to take control and go on to a 55-6 win over the Cardinals.
The Seagulls scored on each of their first three drives of the game while also forcing three punts on the first three drives for Catholic. Catholic's defense was able to force a punt on the fourth drive for Salisbury after
William Cavallaro and
Shane Toal recorded TFL's on second and third down to end the drive.
Salisbury was able to tack on another touchdown before halftime on a fourth down conversion when SyRus McGowan found Dario Belizaire in the endzone to take a 27-0 lead into halftime.
Kevin Barton took over at quarterback in the second half for Catholic and led a nine play 75 yard touchdown drive on the first drive of the half to get the Cardinals their lone touchdown of the game. Barton found
Nole Henry,
Andrew Tabor and
Tae West for first down receptions on the drive.
Hayden Kennedy had a 12 yard catch to put the Cardinals into the red zone and one play later
Daequan Harvin tiptoed down the right sideline for a 12 yard touchdown run to get Catholic on the board.
The Seagulls controlled the game the rest of the way to close out a convincing win, 55-6. The Cardinals fell to 1-3 on the season with the loss.
Barton was efficient throwing the ball when he entered the game, finishing 9-for-10 for 72 yards. Kennedy finished leading the team in receiving yards with three catches for 54 yards.
Harvin was the leading rusher for the Cardinals for a fourth straight game with 14 carries for 57 yards. He recorded his first rushing touchdown of the season in the third quarter.
Toal led the team in tackles with nine, four of which were solo.
Roman Colaberdino finished behind him with eight tackles and
Michael Hopkins and
Marshieh Johnson both recorded five.
The next game for Catholic will start off conference play on Saturday, October 4 against Wilkes. Kickoff is set for 12 pm at Schmidt Stadium.
