Cardinals Fall to #3 Christopher Newport Despite Impressive Defensive Showing

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Catholic women's soccer traveled to #3 Christopher Newport in their last matchup before the conference slate and fell 1-0.

The Cardinals defense saw some early action with an early shot from the Captains. A team block was quickly followed by a save from Ava Rieger to keep Christopher Newport off of the board.

In the 20th minute, Christopher Newport's Kyleigh Gough found the back of the net, assisted by Hanna Heaton and Lexi Hazelgrove, to earn the lone goal of the match.

Despite this early goal, the Cardinals did not back down. The defensive efforts were led by Alex Berish and Teighan Boyle. Faith Sawyer, who earned her way into a new defensive position at left back, also helped keep #3 ranked Christopher Newport from finding many opportunities to score. Payton Hardy led in the midfield for the Cardinals, fighting for possession.

In the second half, the Cardinals had 5 shots, with 6 in total on the night. These shots were from Caroline Aponte, Boyle, Price, Isabel Doherty, and Hardy, who all had impressive showings for Catholic.

Goalkeeper Rieger faced a total of 18 shots, with 6 on goal, adding up to 5 saves on the night.

The Cardinals are looking to use what they have learned in the non-conference stretch of their season as they open up Landmark play this Saturday. The Cardinals will take on Lycoming on Saturday, September 27th at 1 p.m. at Carlini Field.
