Cardinals Drop First Home Landmark Contest to Scranton, 9-15

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Catholic men's lacrosse dropped its first home Landmark Conference contest of the season, 9-15, on Saturday afternoon during Alumni Day. The Royals extended their win streak to five while the Cardinals fell to 2-2 in the conference.

Five different Cardinals scored on the day, led by a hat trick from Cullen Lotz. The sophomore scored the first two Catholic goals of the game to make the score 2-5 in favor of the Royals nine minutes in. Matt Ford, Victor Rosado, and Billy Burton also recorded a goal before the first half horn sounded with the scoreboard reading 5-9. Ford and Burton both added their second of the day in the third quarter. Lotz got his third with 8:21 remaining in the contest before Chris McCabe recorded the last Catholic goal with 3:12 on the clock.

The Royals went on a run in the first quarter, finding the back of the cage seven times on 12 shots. The Catholic defense bounced back and did not allow its opponent to score more than three goals in a quarter the rest of the way. Burton led the ride with two caused turnovers while Mason Russo scooped up five ground balls. The team as a whole caused 12 turnovers and forced Scranton to fail seven clears.

Ryan Macksoud won 21-of-27 faceoffs and picked up 12 ground balls, tying his season high in both categories. He is seven away from winning 550 faceoffs in his career and has surpassed over 300 ground balls.

Catholic recorded 25 more shots than Scranton (60-35), but goalkeeper Carden Kirchner had a career day with 21 saves. Three different goalies saw game action for the Cardinals as Colton Manorek got the start and made two saved before Liam Daly took over and stopped four shots. Nicholas Mort stepped in the cage with just over a minute left to end the contest.

The Cardinals remain at home for their Wednesday evening showdown with the Goucher Gophers starting at 6 p.m.
