Cardinals Start Hot, Drop Non-Conference Contest with St. Mary's

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Catholic jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the opening 10 minutes, but St. Mary's fought back to earn a come from behind victory on Wednesday night.

Catholic trailed 11-10 entering the fourth quarter after Nate Hochrein gave the Seahawks the lead with 1:04 to play in the third. Catholic quickly knotted things up with Ryan Carickhoff scoring a man-up goal off a Brady McMahon feed just 59 seconds into the final period. McMahon put the Cardinals on top with 11:11 remaining, scoring as Victor Rosado picked up his third assist of the evening to make it 12-11.

With the Cardinals leading by one, a defensive battle ensued with both goalies making multiple saves over an eight-plus minute stretch before Declan Horton tied the contest with his fourth goal of the night, beating Liam Daly with 2:51 to play.

After winning the ensuing face-off and calling a timeout moments later, Hochrein took it himself off the restart, putting the Seahawks up by a goal with 2:32 left. Jake Levey did the final damage for the Seahawks to make it 14-12 after logging three assists earlier in the contest.

The first 30 minutes saw a high-speed back-and-forth affair with the game entering the break tied at 9-9. McMahon scored the first two goals of the game before Aiden Doyle put St. Mary's on the board with 6:25 left in the opening period. Rosado and Logan Farrington pushed the Cardinal lead to 4-1 with 5:28 to play, but St. Mary's scored three goals in a 90-second span to tie the contest at 4-4 with 2:15 on the clock. Matt Shandley and Cullen Lotz scored within 35 second of each other to push the lead back to two before Horton beat the buzzer to pull St. Mary's within one after a high-scoring opening frame.

The Catholic lead grew to 8-5 early in the second after goals from Rosado and Carickhoff, but once again the Seahawks trimmed it to one. Carickhoff made it 9-7, but Doyle and Horton both scored in the final 3:11 of the second to send the game to half knotted at 9-9.
