FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Despite scoring the final three goals of the contest, Catholic could not complete the comeback, falling to Mary Washington in a non-conference tilt on Wednesday night.
After scoring three goals in a five-minute stretch to turn an 8-4 contest into an 8-7 game, Catholic had a late chance to tie and force overtime, but
Steven Dezelic's shot was saved by Wyatt Martin with five seconds remaining. Catholic hit the post twice in the final two minutes on shots from Dezelic and
Mike Mulligan.
Catholic opened the fourth period by pulling within a goal as
Cullen Lotz scored less than a minute into the final period. The Eagles would score three straight, taking an 8-4 lead with 9:48 to play. With 7:24 left, it was
Jack Dwyer who started the scoring run for the Cardinals, pulling Catholic back within three. Dezelic found
Brady McMahon with 4:53 to play, trimming the gap to 8-6. It was McMahon again just over two minutes later to make it a one-goal game.
Catholic scored two goals in the opening period, courtesy of
Victor Rosado and
Matt Ford, taking a 2-1 edge into the second. The Cardinals were held scoreless, allowing one goal to send the game into the half tied 2-2.
Billy Burton scored the lone goal of the third for Catholic.
Liam Daly was stellar in goal, making an impressive 12 saves in the losing effort.
Mason Russo and Ford each caused two turnovers while
Mike Tayloe picked up five ground balls and added an assist.
Catholic heads to Williamsport, Pa. on Saturday to take on Lycoming in its Landmark Conference opener.
