WASHINGTON, D.C. - Catholic put together a complete performance on Wednesday afternoon, defeating Bridgewater 17-7 on Carlini Field. The Cardinals improved to 2-4 with the victory while the Eagles fell to 2-5.
14 different Cardinals found the back of the net in the victory led by a hat trick from
Steven Dezelic. Dezelic was joined by freshman
Ryan Carickhoff as the lone Catholic players with multiple goals in the contest. Carickhoff and
Victor Rosado each logged two assists for the Cardinals in the victory.
Catholic was utterly dominant at the face-off X, winning 22-28 face-offs, forcing the Eagles to try four different players at least three times.
After a dominant opening 30 minutes saw
Peter Donley's side build a 7-2 halftime lead, Catholic erupted in the third quarter, outscoring the Eagles 7-1 to take a 14-3 edge.
Leading 5-2 late in the second quarter after Bridgewater answered Dezelic's second goal of the contest, Carickhoff took over a 50-second stretch from 2:54 to 2:04, scoring a pair of goals to push Catholic ahead by five goals heading into the break.
The Cardinals opened the third quarter on a five-goal run over the first 12:24, starting with Rosado's 12th goal of the season at the 13:53 mark.
Logan Farrington followed less than a minute later before
Ryan Macksoud took the face-off and called his own number to give Catholic three goals within a minute.
Matt Ford's behind-the-back goal with 9:37 on the third quarter clock made it an 11-3 game before Dezelic completed the hat trick off a
Cullen Lotz assist with 4:11 to play in the frame.
After
Erik Aulbach and
Brady McMahon scored before the quarter break to make it 14-3, the Cardinals would take a 12-goal advantage just under 90 seconds into the final quarter as Lotz put one home. Bridgewater would outscore Catholic 4-3 in the final frame, but it didn't put much of a dent into a dominant performance.
Macksoud,
Alex Populoh, Aulbach, and
Joseph Slingerland each scored their first goals of the season while Populoh and Slingerland's goals were the first of their Catholic careers.
Fitz McLaughlin's second goal of the season put the Cardinals ahead by two in the early moments of the contest.
Mike Tayloe and
Zach Gibson each caused two turnovers for the Cardinals while
Mason Russo, Populoh,
Finn Smith, and
Mike Mulligan each had four ground balls.
With three more points tonight, Rosado is just three points shy of tying Bennett Bradley for third all-time on Catholic's career list. The senior is working his way up both the career goals and assist lists as well. Dezelic is one goal shy of 50 for his Catholic career.
Catholic takes on #2 Salisbury at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
