Hot Start Propels Cardinals to First Victory of 2025

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Freshman Ryan Carickhoff scored four goals to help push Catholic to a 15-6 victory over McDaniel in the Cardinals' home opener on Saturday. 

Carickhoff was joined on the attack by a trio of multi-goal scorers, Steven Dezelic, Victor Rosado, and Mike Mulligan while Ryan Macksoud dominated the X, winning 20-of-24 face-offs and grabbing 12 ground balls.

Catholic got moving early, scoring three goals in the first 3:34. Matt Shandley and Matt Ford were the first two goal-scorers for the Cardinals before Carickhoff finished off a Rosado feed to make it 3-0. 

McDaniel scored the next two to pull within a goal, but another 3-0 run gave the Cardinals a 6-2 lead after one. Dezelic struck with 6:34 left in the quarter to make it 4-2 and put another one home 21 seconds later to make it a three-goal game. Rosado got on the board with 1:13 left in the opening quarter, making it 6-2. 

A tight 2-1 second period saw Catholic take an 8-3 lead into halftime after Carickhoff's second of the day. Rosado assisted on the goal after scoring his second of the contest earlier in the period. 

Catholic outscored the Green Terror 7-3 in the final 30 minutes to comfortably close out its first win of the season. Carickhoff made it a hat trick with 6:23 to play in the third and then Bjorn Olofson scored his first goal of the season with 2:41 remaining in the quarter. 

Carickhoff's fourth and final goal found the net with 5:12 left to make it 14-6 before Cullen Lotz joined the party with the final goal of the contest with 4:25 left. 

Defensively, Mike Tayloe caused four turnovers and add four ground balls while seven other players caused a turnover for Catholic. Mason Russo and Zach Gibson each caused a turnover and added four ground balls for the Cardinals. Liam Daly gets his first win is goal at Catholic, making nine saves to help shut down the Green Terror attack. 

Catholic returns to action on Wednesday night as St. Mary's (Md.) comes to town for a non-conferene contest at 7 p.m.
