Cardinals Drop Season-High 107 Points to Knock Off Goucher

WASHINGTON, D.C.  — The 15th ranked Catholic women's basketball team entered the final week of the regular season back home at Franny Murray Court to take on Goucher, trying to sweep the Gophers in the regular season. The Cardinals offense soared to the most points scored in the Matt Donohue era with 107 in a fast-paced game that led them to a 107-63 victory for the 21st win of the season.

The Cardinals played a very poised first half, especially in the second quarter, limiting turnovers and shooting at a high clip to take a 55-26 lead into the halftime break. The team shot 21-41 (51%) in the first half to help get out to the large cushion with 34 of those points coming in the second quarter. In total, nine different Catholic players scored in the second with Keegan Douglas and Lauren Kraft leading the way with six each and Amelia Kennedy scoring five. The Cardinals outscored the Gophers 30-12 over the final 7:34 of the quarter.

A 9-0 run to start out the second half kept the momentum on the side of Catholic spurred by lay ups from Anna Scoblick and Carly Mulvaney and a three from Kerry Flaherty. Flaherty went on to knock down three triples in the quarter and Ella Iacone provided a nice spark off the bench with five points. The Cardinals also held Goucher to just 4-for-22 (18%) from the floor in the quarter to help continue to build on the lead.

The Cardinals were able to get several players in the game off the bench in the final quarter to play out the stretch. 17 players entered the game for Catholic and all 17 scored, capped off by a basket from Sam Blumenthal to close out the contest. The Cardinals closed out a 44 point win to head into the final game of the regular season with three straight victories.

Catholic's 107 point total output was the second highest ever in program history, trailing only when the program scored 115 points against Lynchburg in 1985. It is the second time under Matt Donohue that the team has eclipsed 100 points in a contest, joining when the team scored 105 against Carleton in the 2013-14 season.

Flaherty led the way in points for the Cardinals with 14 while also grabbing seven rebounds. Flaherty surpassed her three point total from last season by making four in the game to bring her season total to 60. That brings her to a tie for second place for the most threes made in a single season in program history with Jackie DeBorger (2006-07).

Mulvaney reached a couple career milestones in the win as the game marked the 104th of her collegiate career which brings her into a tie for ninth place for the most games played in program history. She also pulled down nine rebounds to bring her career total to 600, making her just the 15th player in program history to reach 600 career rebounds.

Scoblick, Kennedy and Iacone all finished in double figures with 12, 11 and 11 points respectively. Douglas also played extremely well finishing with eight points, seven rebounds and seven assists. Kraft also had the first double digit point total of her career with 11.

The Cardinals finished the game with 30 assists on 43 field goals which was a season-high. They also finished with a season-high 75 rebounds which is the most by a team in the Matt Donohue era. In two games against the Gophers this season, the Cardinals averaged 101.5 points per game and totaled both of their highest point totals of the season.

The regular season concludes on Saturday, February 22 when Catholic welcomes in Lycoming. Tip off is set for 2 pm and it will be Senior Day for the Cardinals.
