Cardinals Secure Third Straight Twenty-Win Season at Goucher

TOWSON, Md. - A dominant second-half for Catholic saw them take control of Wednesday night's contest to pick up a 78-61 victory at Goucher. The Cardinals improved to 20-4, securing a third straight season with 20 or more wins. This marks the first three-year stretch of 20 or more wins since a run of 10 straight 20-plus win seasons concluded in the 2007-2008 season.

Jamie Ntiamoah shot 89 percent (8-9) from the field, leading the way with 16 points in an efficient performance for the Cardinals. He led four scorers in double figures with Brian Herbert (15), Justin Green (12), and Sean Neylon (10) joining him.

Things were hairy for the Cardinals early on as they took just a one-point lead into the break against the Gophers. Darrell Green and Darnell Morris hit three consecutive threes to start the contest. putting Goucher ahead 9-0 in the first 1:18. A three from Brian Griffin with 16:50 left in the first half put the Gophers up 14-6. A pair of CJ Ruoff free throws would pull Catholic within four at the 12:47 mark before a Herbert three with 8:46 left in the half brought them within a possession.

Neylon gave Catholic a brief one-point lead with 8:18 on the clock, but less than two minutes later the Gophers were back up by five. The lead grew to eight before a 5-0 spurt by Ntiamoah and Green trimmed the gap to 31-28 with 4:01 remaining in the half. After a John Dixon three pushed the lead back to six, Catholic ended the half on a 10-3 run over the final three minutes to take a 38-37 advantage with 17 seconds left on the clock as Ruoff nabbed the ball from David Nwankwo and found Neylon on the break.

Peter Gellene scored the first five points of the half, putting Catholic up by six before Ntiamoah gave the Cardinals their largest lead to that point at 45-37 with 17:46 to play. The lead would remain between four and eight points for more than five minutes before Ntiamoah pushed Catholic ahead 54-45 with 12:03 on the clock. It was Ntiamoah again who finally pushed the Cardinal lead to double figures with 10:24 remaining, but Dixon answered with a three a minute later.

Herbert's triple with 9:05 left in the contest pushed the Cardinals back ahead by 10 and the lead would only fall back into single digits for one more brief moment. A Herbert three with 3:53 left put the lead at its apex before a three-point play from Herbert in the final minute closed out the 17-point road victory.
