Five Cardinals Drop Double Figures in Win Over Rangers

MADISON, N.J.  — The 16th ranked Catholic women's basketball team traveled to New Jersey in search of win number 20 on the season against Drew in the Cardinals final road game of the regular season. Despite trailing by three at halftime, the Cardinals came out poised in the third quarter, outscoring the Rangers 23-7 to propel them to a 78-62 win to advance to 20-3 on the season.

Catholic's offense came out of the gates clicking, especially from beyond the arc as they shot 5-for-7 from deep, including Keegan Douglas making two and Kerry Flaherty hitting another on the first three possessions of the game for the Cardinals. With 1:05 on the clock, Ella Iacone knocked down a triple as well before Gianna Pica scored before the end of the quarter to cut the Catholic lead to six heading into the second.

Both offenses started slow before the Rangers heated up midway through the quarter, going on an 18-7 run over four minutes of play to hold a 43-37 lead with 1:52 to go in the half. Much like Catholic in the opening quarter, Drew's attack was predicted on the three ball as they knocked down all four they took during the run, capped off by Alice Altomare third of the first half. Before the break, Anna Scoblick converted on a layup while getting fouled and knocked down the bonus free throw to put the Cardinals down three going into the half. Scoblick finished the opening half with 13 points to lead Catholic.

Catholic found a way to slow down Drew's efficient offense in the first half in the third quarter holding them to just 3-for-14 from the field in the quarter. The Cardinals regained the lead early on in the third after a Douglas layup and Carly Mulvaney knocked down a jumper. Catholic once again shot it well on offense going 9-for-14 and Mulvaney made a layup at the buzzer to push the lead out to its largest at that point of 13 heading into the final quarter.

Flaherty knocked down a three to start out the fourth quarter and the game was never closer than 11 points from that moment on and the Cardinals went on to a 16 point win to earn their second win of the season over the Rangers. Catholic finished the regular season playing extremely well away from home, going 8-1 in road games and 4-0 in neutral site contests.

Two Cardinals finished with a double-double for the first time this season and it was a second straight game recording one for Scoblick who finished with a team-leading 18 points and 14 rebounds. Mulvaney also recorded her third double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds and her 11 rebounds brings her career total to 591 which moves her to the 15th most in program history.

Flaherty, Douglas and Iacone all also finished in double figures with 14, 13 and 11 respectively. Flaherty's four three's moved her season total to 56, which is the fourth most in a single-season in program history, passing Jayni Webster (2013-14). Iacone's 11 points were the second time she has reached 10+ points in her career and she also pulled down a career-high seven rebounds.

The Cardinals return home for the last week of the regular season starting with Goucher on Wednesday, February 19 for a 6 pm tip at Franny Murray Court.
