MADISON, N.J. - Catholic's nine-game win streak and 19-game road win streak both game to an end on Saturday as the Cardinals fell to Drew, 77-70.
Dan Buckley and
Brian Herbert paced the offense, combining for 36 points, but Catholic (19-4, 14-2) couldn't knock off Drew (20-3, 16-0) in Baldwin Gym. On the flip side, Peso Crump and Josh Kline combined for 40 to ensure that Drew completed the regular season sweep of Catholic, clinching the top seed in the Landmark Conference Tournament.Â
Despite trailing for much of the second half,
Sean Neylon's lone three-pointer of the contest put Catholic ahead 59-57 with 5:14 to play. Kline tied it for Drew just eight seconds later, starting a quick back-and-forth that saw
Charley Hepting tied the game at 61-61 with 4:23 to play. Kline's response was successful again and with 4:07 to play, Drew took the lead for good.Â
A three-pointer from Malcolm Newman with 1:37 on the clock gave Drew a 68-63 lead. After a miss on the other end, it was Newman again, this time in the paint to extend the lead to 70-63. The lead would get up to nine with 35 seconds left before Drew closed out a seven-point home win.Â
The Cardinals largest lead of the contest was five with 13:03 to play in the first half following a Herbert layup. Back-to-back threes from Kline with 6:20 and 5:46 on the first-half clock pushed Drew up by six. The Cardinals would retake the lead on a
Justin Green free throw with 3:05 left, but Drew would take a 32-29 lead into the break.Â
QUICK HITTERS
- Prior to this afternoon, Catholic held the longest road winning streak in men's college basketball as they had won 19 straight.Â
- Buckley's 19 points were one shy of his career-high set at the end of January at Susquehanna. After averaging 6.9 and 6.7 points per game as a sophomore and a junior, Buckley is up to 9.9 points per contest as a senior.Â
- Herbert bounced back from a tough stretch with 17 points after scoring just 16 total in the previous three contests. Herbert was a perfect six-of-six at the free throw line, pushing his season percentage up to 84.4. That percentage would rank him 10th in a single-season in the Division III era for Catholic.Â
- Neylon hit his 81st three of the year, but Drew held him to just seven points, his first game since January 8 in which he didn't reach double figures.Â
- In two games against the Rangers this season, the three ball eluded the Cardinals as they made just 2-9 today, making them 5-21 from three against Drew.Â
- The Cardinals are locked into the second seed in the Landmark Conference Men's Basketball Tournament and will earn a bye into the semifinals as they look to defend the title.
