Cardinals Defeat Lycoming on the Road in Landmark Semifinals

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The third seeded Catholic women's soccer team earned a 1-0 win in the second seeded Lycoming Warriors in the Landmark Conference Semifinals.

In the previous matchup of these two teams, Lycoming came away with a 1-0 win after a late first half goal.

Both teams were evenly matched in the first half, with Caroline Aponte having a pair of shots and Peyton Coron chalking up three. Ava Gregorio and Faith Sawyer each collected a shot as well.

The second half started out in the same back-and-forth fashion. Lycoming had four shots in before Catholic answered with a pair of their own.

Catholic found a way to break the scoring drought in the 76th minute. The Cardinals earned a throw-in within their offensive third. Avery Bowman sent the throw into the box with Coron collecting the throw. The senior then poked the ball to her left where Sam Cesario one-touched the ball to the back of the net, securing the lead.

In an even matchup, both teams collected eight shots on goal, with Catholic just edging the Warriors out with 16 shots to 11.

A force on defense, goalkeeper Ava Rieger made eight saves on the night. Teighan Boyle and Emily Harkins were key pieces for the defense as well, helping keep the Warriors off the board.

With her goal, Sam Cesario now has 6 goals on the season, tied with Caroline Aponte. Peyton Coron led Catholic with six shots, teammate Sam Cesario following behind at four.

Up next, the Cardinals will head to Scranton, Pa. on November 8th to take on the Scranton Royals in the Landmark Conference Championship.
