Cardinals Rally Past River Hawks for Comeback Victory

SELINSGROVE, Pa. - The Catholic volleyball team closed out regular season conference play on Saturday afternoon at Susquehanna. The Cardinals started off the match down two sets to the River Hawks, but they found their rhythm mounted a major comeback, coming out on top 3-2.

The first two sets were close, the Catholic falling 25-20 in the first and 25-23 in the second.

Susquehanna started set three in similar fashion, going up 3-0 early on. But the Cardinals came alive in the third set, finding their rhythm and taking the lead from the River Hawks. They recorded a .414 hitting percentage in the set and notched 15 kills to Susquehanna's seven. Erin Faughnan had four kills in set three, contributing to her total of 16 in the match. She currently leads the squad with 258 kills in total. The Cardinals capitalized on the River Hawks' five attack errors, taking the third set 25-13.

Catholic stayed in the fight in set four, getting on the board first for the first time in the match. The Cardinals hit .250 compared to Susquehanna's .053. They recorded 13 kills to the River Hawks eight, securing a trip to the final set, taking set four 25-18.

The fifth set saw a tight battle. Catholic went up two to start the final set, and Susquehanna responded with two of their own. There was some back-and-forth until the Cardinals began to run away with the lead. Juliette Cummings delivered a kill to seal the deal for the Cardinals, defeating the River Hawks 15-11 in set five, and 3-2 overall.

Faughnan led the charge with 16 kills, four blocks, and two aces. Julia Raab was just behind Faughnan with 14 kills, and she led the team with 16 digs. Anna Maria Carella recorded an impressive .600 hitting percentage and led the charge with 22 assists. Kate Berra was right on her tail with 21 assists.

The Cardinals have extended their record to 7-2 in conference play and 13–13 overall. They will close out regular season play with a match up just down the road at Gallaudet. The match is set for Thursday, November 6 at 7 p.m. in the Field House.
