WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Catholic women's soccer team collected its first home conference win against Goucher 8-0.
The Cardinals struck early, scoring in the 5th minute. Senior
Ava Gregorio found open teammate
Faith Sawyer, who then shot the ball, finding the back of the net. Gregorio collected a goal of her own in the 12th minute off of a pass from
Sam Cesario. Captain Cesario collected her first assist of the season in her first game back from injury.
Sophomore
Caroline Aponte had herself a day, scoring 5 goals in a row. In the 19th minute of the game, Aponte found the back of the net for the first time in the game. Aponte's second goal occurred on a penalty kick late in the first half. Her next two goals were solo goals occurring in the 68th and 72nd minute, respectively. Her fifth and final goal was assisted by Gregorio in the 75th minute.
To round out the Cardinals offensive performance,
Kelsie Price scored in the 81st minute.
With her performance, Aponte now shares the Catholic women's soccer program record of individual goals in a game. The previous sole record holder was Somer Hienle, who also scored 5 goals against Trinity (D.C.) on September 16th, 1998.
All three of Catholic's goalkeepers saw time in today's shutout. Senior goalkeeper
Ava Rieger played the entire first half while
Madelyn Catania and
Lauren Creamer split the second half.
The Cardinal defense was able to prevent the Gophers from getting a single shot off, while the Cardinals had 35 shots on the night. Catholic also earned 15 corners to Goucher's zero.
Up next, the Cardinals will host Wilkes on Saturday, October 11th at 1 p.m. for Senior Day.
