WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Catholic volleyball team looked to keep up its winning ways in Landmark play against Drew on Friday night. The Cardinals played solid in all aspects of the match throughout, cruising to a 3-0 victory over the Rangers to improve to 9-12 on the season.
After falling behind 5-2 in the opening set, the Cardinals used an 8-2 run to take momentum where
Julia Turchiano delivered two kills and the Rangers committed five straight attacking errors.
Erin Faughnan and
Julia Raab picked up kills to help Catholic extend its lead to 14-8 and they never looked back for the rest of the frame, taking it 25-18.
Mariana Roman Cruz added a kill in the ladder half of the set and Faughnan picked up two more as well to help give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.
The teams traded points packed and forth early in the second set, before a 4-0 Catholic run gave it a 12-10 lead with two kills from
Juliette Cummings. The Cardinals held the lead the rest of the set as
Alani Rivera Diaz, Raab and Faughnan all picked up kills to extend the lead out to 23-16. A kill from Cummings created a set point for Catholic and Drew committed a service error to give it a 25-19 set two win to take a commanding 2-0 lead. The Cardinals held the Rangers to a -.074 hitting percentage in the set to help set up a chance at a sweep.
The Cardinals put together their best offensive set in the third frame, hitting .294 with a match-high 17 kills to take the final set 25-16. Catholic gained a 7-2 lead to take control early in the set and the lead was extended to 17-11 late after Faughnan, Rivera Diaz and Roman Cruz all picked up kills to help the Cardinals efforts. Raab delivered the final kill in the set to close out the victory for Catholic. The win moved the Cardinals to 5-1 in conference play thus far this season.
Catholic held Drew to a -.071 hit percentage in the match, which is the lowest a team has hit against the Cardinals so far this season. It was the Cardinals third 3-0 win of the season, all of which have come against Landmark opponents.
Faughan led the Cardinals offensive efforts with 10 kills while hitting .600 in the match. Raab also finished with double-digit kills with 10 and also added 12 digs to complete her fourth double-double of the season.
Kate Berra led the team in assists with 23, which was the fifth time she has eclipsed 20 assists on the year.
Cummings led the Catholic defense with a career-high six blocks with Roman Cruz also adding three blocks.
Anna Maria Carella finished behind Raab in digs with eight and
Marin Stensrud finished with seven.
The Cardinals are back in action on Saturday, October 18 on Cardinal Weekend to take on Scranton. The match is set to start at 12 pm on
Franny Murray Court.
