Dan Buckley, Catholic (15-3, 10-1) held on for a 70-65 road victory at Susquehanna (10-8, 7-4) on Wednesday night.
Buckley scored 14 of his 20 points in the second half as the Cardinals fended off a late charge from the River Hawks.
The Cardinals retook the lead at 34-33 on a Buckley jumper with 17:56 to play after a four-point swing to open the second half put Susquehanna ahead by one. The Cardinals never relinquished the lead, growing it as high as 12 before a River Hawk surge in the late minutes of the contest.
Catholic led 51-39 with 9:43 to play, but Susquehanna had it within five after a Jackson Van Wagener three with 5:35 remaining. Despite pushing the lead back to 10 less than 30 seconds later, Susquehanna quickly ripped off a 7-0 run and trimmed the deficit to 58-55 with 3:46 to play.
A
Brian Herbert jumper with 2:09 on the clock had Catholic ahead 62-57 before two Buckley free throws bumped the lead up to seven with 1:21 remaining. Buckley added two more free throws following a Cooper Haberern three-pointer and the Catholic lead was six with 62 seconds on the clock.
Susquehanna would pull within one as Isaac Washington drained two free throws and Haberern was fouled shooting a three after a
Sean Neylon turnover. Three free throws later, Catholic led just 66-65 with 35 seconds remaining.
CJ Ruoff would make three free throws over the next 18 seconds, putting Catholic ahead 69-65 with 17 ticks on the second half clock. Van Wagener's three wouldn't fall and
Googie Seidman added the final free throw for Catholic, taking a 70-65 lead with 10 seconds left. Susquehanna's final shot with four seconds remaining didn't drop and the Cardinals hung on for a five-point road win.
