TOWSON, Md. — The 20th ranked Catholic women's basketball team looked to bounce back after a loss over the weekend as they took the short trip to Towson to take on Goucher who came in the highest scoring team in the country. The Cardinals saw its highest scoring output in a half this season to open up the ballgame, allowing the team to coast to 96-58 convincing victory to put up their 14th win of the season and move to 7-2 in conference play.
The tone was set by the Cardinals from the opening tip, outsourcing the Gophers 36-13 in the opening quarter to take an immediate convincing lead.
Kerry Flaherty came out of the gates on fire from deep, scoring 11 points while going 3-for-3 from three-point range.
Carly Mulvaney also got out to a strong start with nine points in the first quarter.
With a sizable early lead, Catholic was able to turn to its bench for a good portion of the second quarter and
Ella Iacone stepped up in a big way, dropping 10 points while draining a pair of three pointers in the process. Seven different Cardinals wound up scoring in the second and the lead grew to 60-26 going into the halftime break. Catholic shot an impressive 68% from the field as a team in the half, which is its highest mark of the season in a half, and 70% from beyond the arc (7-for-10). On the flip side, Goucher only made seven field goals on 36 attempts in the first half while only making one three.
The large lead allowed the Cardinals to get several players out on the court in the second half and they coasted to a 96-58 victory over the Gophers, putting up their highest point output of the season. Catholic has eclipsed the 90 point threshold two times in the last three games.
Catholic had a season-high six players reach double-digit points in the win, once again led by
Anna Scoblick who finished with 14 and four rebounds. Also reaching double figures was Iacone (13),
Keegan Douglas (12), Flaherty (12), Mulvaney (11) and
Amelia Kennedy (10). Douglas also finished with a career-high seven assists and five rebounds. Freshmen
Raquel Guidetti and
Sam Blumenthal also had solid contributions off the bench, both scoring six points.
The 96 points put up by the Cardinals is the highest point total put up by a Catholic team in quite some time as it is the most since November 30, 2013 when the team scored 105 against Carelton, which is the most points scored in the
Matt Donohue era with the team. The team also remains one of the nations leaders in opponent field goal percentage, holding the Gophers to just 22% from the field, the third-lowest allowed by the team this season.
Catholic returns to
Franny Murray Court on Saturday, January 25 when they welcome in Wilkes for the second matchup of the season. The Cardinals defeated Wilkes 91-34 on the road earlier in the season. Tip off is set for 2 pm.
