Neylon, Seidman Push Cardinals Past Royals

SCRANTON, Pa. - Sean Neylon continued an outstanding senior season with a career-high 30 points as Catholic (12-3, 7-1) defeated Scranton (7-8, 2-6), 82-62, on Saturday. 

Neylon was nails in the first 20 minutes, scoring 23 of his 30 points as the Cardinals built a 16-point advantage at the break. The senior hit a pair of threes in the first 1:30 to put Catholic ahead 6-2 before nailing another trey at the 15:51 mark. 

Scranton pulled the contest to a tie with 12:42 remaining in the opening half, but Googie Seidman drilled a three to push Catholic ahead 17-14. The Cardinals would go on a 10-0 run to take a 27-16 lead with 8:40 to play in the first half as Neylon knocked down his fifth three of the game. 

A Seidman three-pointer with 3:27 left in the first would extend the Catholic lead to 40-25 with a pair of Cephas Wilson-Bahun free throws making the lead 16 just before halftime. 

The Catholic lead grew to 20 in the second half at the 10:48 mark as Seidman knocked down another three to make it 62-42. It would prove to be the largest lead of the game for the Cardinals who would get a late three from Peter Gellene to finish off a 20-point victory. 

QUICK HITTERS
  • Catholic extended the nation's longest road winning streak to 17 games. The Cardinals' road win streak is five games longer than any NCAA men's team (Saint Mary's - Division I), and is eight wins longer than any other team in men's Division III basketball. 
  • Saturday marks the third straight victory over the Royals for Catholic and the seventh win in eight tries. Prior to this run of success, the Royals had won six-of-seven against Catholic. 
  • With 30 points, Neylon raised his season average to 17.6 points per game. He has scored 20 or more points in seven games this season. Neylon continued his three-point barrage with seven made threes for the second straight game and the third time this season. He has 57 makes and is hitting an impressive 53.8 percent of his threes. 
  • Seidman returned to the court for the first time in two weeks to play his best game of the season, scoring 15 points and grabbing five rebounds. The guard was a perfect five-of-five from three in 24 minutes of action. 
  • Dan Buckley recorded nine of the team's 17 assists on Saturday, setting a new career-high for helpers for the senior point guard. 
  • Charley Hepting added seven points and eight rebounds off the bench in 18 minutes of action, leading the game in boards and setting a career-high.
  • Will McLoughlin had 25 points to lead the way for the Royals, adding five rebounds and five assists. 
Catholic returns home on Wednesday to face the Goucher Gophers before welcoming Wilkes to town on Saturday for Alumni Day.
