WASHINGTON, D.C. - Six Cardinals scored at least eight points as Catholic (13-3, 8-1) defeated Goucher (4-12, 3-6) on Wednesday evening in the DuFour Center.
Brian Herbert scored 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds to pace Catholic while
Sean Neylon and
Dan Buckley each added 13 points. Junior big man
Jamie Ntiamoah finished with 11 points and nine rebounds as well for the Cardinals.
In a game with more than 40 fouls called, the Cardinals were lights out at the free throw line, knocking down 92.6 percent of their free throws (25-27) in the win.
Catholic took a 31-20 lead into the locker room at halftime after a low-scoring opening 20 minutes. Tied 8-8 at the 10:22 mark,
Charley Hepting gave Catholic a 10-8 lead after a put back before
Matthew Gorman scored to make it 12-8 with 7:25 to play. The Gophers pulled back within two, but a three-point play for Neylon pushed Catholic ahead 15-10 with 6:45 to go.
Herbert pushed the Cardinals ahead by seven at the 4:22 mark, hitting a jumper after a Goucher turnover. After a Buckley miss, Hepting dunked home the second-chance effort with 3:49 left on the first-half clock to make it 22-16. With 1:58 remaining,
CJ Ruoff found
Justin Green for three to push Catholic ahead 27-18, its largest lead to that point. Herbert scored with four seconds remaining in the half to push Catholic's lead to double digits for the first time.
An 11-4 run in the first 3:35 of the second half burst Catholic out to an 18-point lead as Herbert scored six of the 11 points during that stretch. With 14:09 to play, Goucher cut the deficit to 10 after a successful three-point play from David Nwankwo. However, the Cardinals answered with a 13-2 run, taking a 21-point advantage with 9:35 to play as Buckley hit a pair of free throws.
The Gophers weren't finished, pulling withing 14 with 6:07 to play, but Hepting scored, followed by a dunk from Buckley to stretch the gap back to 18. The Gophers got within 12 on a Darnell Morris three, but Catholic outscored Goucher 13-7 over the final 3:12 to pull out an 18-point victory.
The Cardinals have won seven straight against Goucher, dating back to February, 2020, and have won 29 of 33 since the inception of the Landmark Conference in the 2007-2008 season.
Catholic will host Wilkes at 4 p.m. on Saturday while celebrating Alumni Day in the DuFour Center. Alumni festivities begin at 10 a.m. and free pizza will be provided to students before the 4 p.m. tip.
