WASHINGTON, D.C. - Catholic improved to 2-1-1 on the season as it logged its third clean sheet in just four games with a 1-0 victory over Haverford (2-1) on a chilly September afternoon.
Sophomore defender
Alex Berish scored her first career goal on a beautiful strike from distance in the 29th minute to propel
Casey Sommers' program to victory. A poor decision from Haverford keeper Lily Buyer put Berish in position to strike. Buyer tried to wing it out to Phoebe Garfield, but Berish was all over it, collecting the ball, setting up, and drilling it into the top left corner from 20-plus meters out.
The Cardinals wouldn't score again, but as has been the case for the past two seasons, the stout defense didn't allow the Fords to truly challenge
Ava Rieger. Berish,
Sam Cesario, and
Teighan Boyle played the full game on defense for Catholic as did midfielder
Payton Hardy.
Kiera Price and
Kaitlyn Houri split time on the other wing for Catholic as they continue to stifle opposing attacks.
The Fords had a good opportunity roughly 20 minutes into the contest, but Rieger charged to assist
Emily Harkins who was marking Olivia Daulerio, forcing a shot wide of the target. The Cardinals had a look with just over 21 minutes to play in the first half as
Peyton Coron headed it forward to
Isabel Doherty in the box. Doherty got a piece of it, but Buyer was there to collect.
The Cardinals nearly got a second first half goal with just over four minutes to play in the half, but
Angelina Serrano's shot hit the left post after collecting a nice pass from Houri and spinning open.
In the 61st minute, Rieger was credited with her lone save as she got a hand up to punch away a Sarah Klink shot off a Haverford corner. The Fords got another look moments later after another corner, but Keira Prince's shot stayed wide.
Mattigan DiBease had a great chance in the 71st minute, but once again a Cardinal shot hit the woodwork and stayed out of the net. Haverford recorded just one shot in the final 20 minutes as Catholic held on for the victory.
The last time Catholic recorded three shutouts in its first four matches came back in 2017 as the Cardinals started 3-1 with shutout victories over Virginia Wesleyan, Guilford, and Randolph-Macon.
