Hornets Score Early, Hold Off Cardinals

WASHINGTON, D.C.
- Kayla Jenkins scored a seventh-minute goal to propel Shenandoah (2-1) past Catholic (1-1-1) on Wednesday evening at Carlini Field. The Cardinals saw the better of the remaining chances, but couldn't find a way to put the equalizer past Hornet keeper Kasie Kilmer.

The Cardinals put five shots on target to Shenandoah's two while Catholic kept the Hornets from recording a shot on goal in the 88 minutes. In the seventh minute, McKenna Newcome received a pass in the attacking third from Kammrynn Mays. Newcome played a through ball for Jenkins who got a touch to it just before Catholic keeper Ava Rieger could get an outstretched hand on it. Jenkins was able to get a foot on it once more past Rieger and finish before a sliding Alex Berish could get there to prevent the goal.

Catholic had a great opportunity in the 21st minute as Sara Placide played a beautiful ball out on the right flank for Ava Gregorio. Gregorio had a clear one-on-one with the keeper and tried to go near post, but Kilmer turned it away. The ball stayed loose for just an extra beat, but Kilmer beat Gregorio to the ball for safe keeping.

Isabel Doherty played a strong game off the bench for Catholic, giving the Cardinals 67 minutes and a shot on target late in the first half. After a Shenandoah turnover, she took a rip from just outside the penalty area, but didn't have quite enough on it to threaten Kilmer. Doherty proved to be a bright spot in the midfield in the second half as well, winning possession and creating opportunities to attack for Catholic.

The Cardinals changed up the 11 for the second half and got a pair of looks in the first 15 minutes, but Kilmer turned away an A.J. Hudock header and a Faith Sawyer shot to keep her sheet clean. Catholic's final great look came with less than six minutes to play as a failed clearance provided Placide a clean look from inside the box. The shot cleared a ducking Doherty and split two defenders, but Kilmer made a nice read and turned it away for her final save of the night.

Berish, Sam Cesario, and Teighan Boyle played the full 90 for Catholic while Placide and Payton Hardy stayed on the pitch for 80 of the 90 minutes. Doherty and Avery Bowman played 67 minutes off the bench while Meredith Dunsmore saw 55 minutes of action as a reserve.

The Cardinals remain on a home stand, welcoming Haverford on Saturday afternoon at Carlini Field.
