Ashland, Va. - Lauren Keast scored two key goals to help propelled Catholic University field hockey to an overtime win against Randolph-Macon on Wednesday night. The Cardinals picked up their first victory of the season by a score of 3-2.
Keast scored the game-winning goal six minuted into the overtime period. After inserting the penalty corner, she weaved her way in front of the cage and fired two shots at opposing goalkeeper Valentina Ambrogi-Torres. Both shots were saved, but Keast was able to collect the rebound once again off a kick-away attempt by Ambrogi-Torres and slam the ball across the goal line for the win.Â
The sophomore also scored the first goal of the contest, which came with 1:25 remaining in the first quarter. The Yellow Jackets send a long crossing pass across the middle of the field and Keast was ready to pounce. She picked off the pass, started a fast break towards the end line and sent a shot towards the right corner. A helpful deflection off a Randolph-Macon defender put the Cardinals up 1-0.Â
The lead did not last long as the Yellow Jackets answered with a goal of their own less than a minute later. Ashlyn White found the back of the cage with a long shot from just inside the circle to bring the game even.
The second quarter saw both sides tally four shots, but neither team could reclaim the lead before halftime.
Catholic turned up the pressure in the third quarter. They earned 11 corners and produced 10 shots in the stanza while giving up zero in each category to the Yellow Jackets. Forward MaryKate Ardizzi was the one to convert for the Cardinals as she found the ball at her stick a midst a scrum in front of the cage off a penalty corner set. The junior delivered a strike down the middle to score the second goal of her career while Niki Micciche earned her 11th career assist on the play.Â
The Yellow Jackets stole back some of the moment when Llana Thach brought the game back even with a goal two minutes into the fourth quarter.
Both teams had scoring chances in overtime, but the Cardinals took advantage of a great look down the stretch to score the game-winning goal and come out victorious. Keast's two goals bring her career total to five as she scored just three goals from her defensive postilion in her rookie season.Â
Oli Bond made her collegiate debut in the contest and recorded two shots on goal. Goalkeeper Abigail Kearney recorded six saves on the day.Â
The Cardinals will remain on the road for their next contest against Dickinson. The Saturday, September 7 match up is scheduled for 1 p.m.
