WASHINGTON, D.C. - Catholic opened the season with its second consecutive clean sheet as it played Grove City to a 0-0 draw on Saturday evening at Carlini Field.
Despite a lightning delay of roughly an hour, Saturday's game was able to be completed, but neither team found the back of the net. The center back duo of
Sam Cesario and
Teighan Boyle went the distance for
Casey Sommers' team once again, as Catholic held the Wolverines to just two shots on target.
Offensively, the Cardinals put six shots on the target against Grove City keeper Courtney Lisman, but the winning blow was never was struck. Boyle got a clean look from deep with less than seven minutes remaining, but Lisman wasn't truly threatened as she kept her sheet clean as well. Grove City had a final push with some menace in the final minute, but the Cardinals held on for what is now their eighth clean sheet in nine contests dating back to last October.
With two shutouts to start the season,
Ava Rieger now has 14 for her career, moving her past Nina Fernandez for third-most in program history. She sits two back of Tere Rossi and 11 shy of Lexi Halperin's program record.
Catholic returns to Carlini Field on Wednesday evening as it hosts Shenandoah at 7 p.m.
