Cards Celebrate Senior Day with Big Win, Earn Home Quarterfinal on Tuesday

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Catholic University men's lacrosse team celebrated its seniors in style with a comprehensive victory over Wilkes on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals downed the Colonels 24-6 to end the regular season with a victory and clinch a home game in the Landmark Conference Tournament.

With the victory, Catholic secured a 5-4 conference record. Thanks to other results around the conference, Drew and Moravian also finished with identical records, and thanks to multiple levels of tie-breaking procedure, Catholic earned the No. 4 and the right to host the Landmark Conference Quarterfinal on Tuesday night. Peter Donley's team won the tiebreak thanks to superior goal difference in games against Drew and Moravian.

On the day, Catholic left no doubt about the result. The Cardinals went up 2-0 after just 50 seconds behind goals from Victor Rosado and Matt Ford and never looked back. Rosado finished with two goals, an assist and five ground balls while Ford scored once and provided two assists.

The Cardinals were dominant at the face-off X, with top specialist Ryan Macksoud obliterating his competition to the tune of a 15-for-17 clip and 11 ground balls. The junior also produced an electric goal late in the first quarter when he won a face-off cleanly and drove straight to the net for his second goal of the season.

Jack Suchanek went 9-for-10 at the draw and Connor Baia produced a 5-for-6 mark to push Catholic to a stunning 29-for-33 clip as a team. The Cardinals were also a near-perfect 24-of-25 on clear while holding the Colonels to just 20-of-26.

Steven Dezelic led the scoring efforts for Catholic with five goals while Matt Shandley joined him with a hat trick of his own. John Hadden joined Rosado with two goals while Liam Hill also netted a pair, scoring multiple goals in back-to-back games for the first time in his career. Andrew Walsh and Patrick McKinley both scored their first goals of the season in the win as well.

Ryan Donohue made it a senior day to remember, putting home the first goal of his collegiate career in the third quarter. The usual-defender then doubled his luck later in the frame, firing home an absolute howitzer of a shot to find the back of the net again.

Senior Mike Mulligan pitched in with an assist while graduate students Brendan Scott and Drew Zak both contributed on defense, with Scott grabbing a ground ball and Zak causing one turnover. Senior Connor McDonough also featured while Luke Geraghty, who was inactive, was also honored.

With results around the conference and the way the tie-breaking procedure played out, Catholic will have a golden opportunity to exact some revenge from earlier in the season. The Cardinals will host Moravian on Tuesday night after the Greyhounds earned the five seed after falling 12-7 to Scranton today. Catholic lost 11-10 in the regular season match-up in Bethlehem, Pa., earlier this month, falling in overtime.

Opening face-off in the win-or-go-home affair is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Carlini Field.
