Cardinals Take Down Greyhounds in Convincing Fashion, Move on to Semis

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Catholic men's lacrosse advanced to the Landmark Conference Semifinals with a dominant 13-5 victory over No. 5 Moravian on Tuesday night at Carlini Field. The Cardinals took a 3-2 lead with 10:56 left in the first half and never looked back. Catholic earns its 10th victory of the season and will head to Elizabethtown on Thursday to take on the top-seeded Blue Jays.

Four Cardinals registered multi-goal games in the victory with junior Victor Rosado putting together a four-point (3 goals, 1 assist) performance to lead the way. Rosado's first goal of the contest put Catholic up 4-2 in the second and the junior would go on to score a pair of second-half goals as he moves into seventh on the Catholic single-season list with 42 goals this season. Rosado ties his total of 69 points from a season ago, putting him in second all-time in Catholic single-season history.

Ryan Macksoud controlled the game at the face-off X, winning 18 of his 22 tries. Macksoud also grabbed 13 ground balls to lead the Cardinals while moving into fourth place all-time on the Landmark single-season face-offs won list. When Moravian did get a clean look at net, Catholic freshman Tyler Merchant was prepared to turn them away, totaling 15 saves to go with just five goals allowed.

Catholic led 7-3 at the break, ending the second quarter on a 3-0 run that would turn into a 5-0 spurt into the third quarter. Matt Shandley scored his sixth goal of the season with 3:09 remaining in the half to put the Cardinals ahead 5-3 before Liam Hill put home his second of the day 29 seconds later off a nice feed from Logan Farrington. With 43 seconds left in the half, Fitz McLaughlin scored a beauty as Cullen Lotz put it right on his stick as he leaped above the crease.

Rosado and Steven Dezelic scored with 11:07 and 10:28 to go in the third to expand Catholic's lead to six. Ryan Kokoszka would find the net for Moravian, but John Hadden answered off a Dezelic assist 3:30 later to keep the lead at six goals through three quarters.

Connor James scored his 148th career goal for Moravian with 11:07 to play, but that was the only goal the Greyhounds would get in the final 15 minutes as Lotz, Mike Mulligan, and Rosado added the finishing touches on the victory.

Mike Tayloe and Matt Ford each caused three turnovers for the Cardinals while Mason Russo corralled four ground balls and added a caused turnover on the defensive end.

Catholic improves to 2-0 against Moravian in the Landmark Tournament, also defeating the Greyhounds 11-7 in 2021. The Cardinals will take on Elizabethtown on Thursday in their 11th Landmark Semifinal appearance since 2010.
