Blue Jays Pull Away From Cardinals Late

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Catholic and Elizabethtown sat tied at 7-7 late in the third quarter of Wednesday evening's Landmark Conference battle, but the Blue Jays ended the game on a 7-2 run to defeat the Cardinals 14-9 and remain unbeaten in conference play.

Victor Rosado's 32nd goal of the season came with 5:04 to play in the third as Catholic tied the game for the sixth time at 7-7. Less than a minute later, Riley Langen took back the lead for the Blue Jays and they would hold it for the remainder of the game. Rosado scored again in the fourth with 2:48 to play, giving him two for the day and 33 for the season. Ian McKinley put his second career goal into the back of the net with 16 ticks remaining on the clock.

The first half showed to be a defensive battle with both teams scoring just five goals in the half. The Cardinals fell behind 4-2 with 11:42 to play in the second, but responded with three straight to take a 5-4 lead. Matt Shandley scored his second goal of the season to pull the Cardinals within a run before Jack Dwyer tied the contest off a John Hadden feed with 8:59 left in the half. With 4:04 to go, Cullen Lotz scored his ninth goal of the season with an assist from Brady McMahon to give its second and final lead of the contest.

Rosado proved to be the lone player with multiple goals for Catholic while Steven Dezelic, Mike Mulligan, and Ryan Macksoud also found the back of the net. Macksoud's goal was the second of his career and first since 2022. Dezelic joined Rosado in the 30-goal club while Rosado sits three points away from his second consecutive 60-plus-point season.

Tyler Merchant was stellar in goal, making 17 saves for the Cardinals while Mason Russo and Matt Ford led the defensive effort with a combined seven ground balls and a caused turnover. Macksoud had seven ground balls and a caused turnover while winning 14 face-offs as well.

Catholic travels to Juniata on Saturday in its penultimate Landmark Conference contest of the 2024 season.
