Cardinals Stymie Eagles; Pick Up 21st Win

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Ninth-ranked Catholic women's basketball opened up a 23-point halftime lead on the way to a 73-50 victory over Juniata on Wednesday evening in the DuFour Center. The Cardinals improved to 21-1 on the season and 14-1 in Landmark play while the Eagles fell to 3-19 and 2-13 in the conference.

Sarah White and Anna Scoblick scored 12 points each to lead the Cardinal scoring efforts while Keegan Douglas and Carly Mulvaney added 11 and 10 respectively. White handed out a team-high five assists while nabbing four steals, Douglas chipped in four assists and four rebounds, and Mulvaney grabbed five boards and dished out four assists.

Mulvaney was instrumental in building Catholic's lead early on, scoring eight of her 10 points in the first quarter. Mulvaney scored five of the team's first eight points as the Cardinals built an 8-0 lead off the jump. Five straight from Douglas pushed Catholic's lead to 10 just 4:05 into the game before a Scoblick fastbreak layup off a Mulvaney steal made it 15-3 to force a Juniata timeout with 5:34 left in the quarter.

Leading by nine after the first thanks to a late Steph Emert three for the Eagles, Catholic locked down on the defensive end in the second, holding Juniata to just three makes and 18.8 percent from the field in the period. A pair of Kerry Flaherty threes swelled the lead to 29-14 just 1:34 into the second before Douglas and Scoblick scored to make it a 10-0 run, giving the Cardinals a 33-14 advantage with 6:27 remaining in the half. With 1:43 to play in the second, an Alexa Kenah three-pointer swelled the lead to 21 ahead of two free throws from Molly Aromando to make it 44-21 at halftime.

Catholic led by as many as 27 in the third, taking a 57-30 lead on a Mulvaney to Scoblick find for an easy bucket. The Eagles would cut it back to 18 more than halfway through the final quarter of action, but two more late free throws from Aromando pushed the final gap to 23 points with 12 seconds remaining.

10 different players scored for Catholic with Kaleigh Beirne scoring nine points and pulling in three rebounds off the bench. Kenah added five points and seven boards while Sofia Travieso got on the board for the fifth time this season with two points and two rebounds.

Wednesday marked the seventh time this season that Catholic held its opponent to 30 percent shooting or worse from the field. For the season, opposing teams shoot just 33.7 percent against Catholic. With her 12 points, White went over 200 points for the season, pushing all five of Catholic's starters over the 200-point mark in 2023-24. White also moved into a tie for 10th on the Catholic single-season steals list with 67 so far this season.

Three games remain for Matt Donohue's team in the regular season with its final home game upcoming on Saturday as Catholic hosts Drew for Senior Day and Alumni Day at Franny Murray Court.
