TOWSON, Md. – The Catholic University women's basketball team picked up its 23rd win of the season with a dominate 93-25 road victory over Goucher on Wednesday evening. The Cardinals improved to 16-1 in the Landmark Conference and have clinched the top seed in the Landmark Conference tournament for the first time since 2016-17.
Tonight's contest marks the third time this season the Cardinals have scored 90 or more points. It also marks only the 3rd season in program history that a team has recorded 23 or more wins, tying the 2016-17 team for second-most. Catholic has held teams under 50 points seven times this season, but this contest marks the first in which they have held their opponent under 30.
Defense leading to offense was the name of the game for Catholic. The first quarter saw the Cardinals get off to a commanding 23-2 lead fueled primarily by their defensive effort. They held Goucher scoreless for the first eight minutes and 30 seconds of the game, giving up the only first-quarter points with 1:29 left. The next 10 minutes of play saw the lead expand from 21 to 37. The Cardinals held the Gophers to just 3-of-28 shooting from the field in the first half and scored 29 points off turnovers. Twenty-one of their first-half points came from the bench and 14 of them were recorded from second-chance opportunities.Â
The second half was more of the same. Catholic scored 44 points to Goucher's 12 in the last 20 minutes. They finished shooting 42.4 percent the field and grabbed a total 70 rebounds including 31 on the offensive end. Goucher shot just 13.8 percent from the field overall and grabbed 37 rebounds.
Carly Mulvaney led all scorers and rebounders with an efficient 13 points and 10 rebounds in 17 minutes. This marks the second double-double for Mulvaney this season and third of her career.
Kerry Flaherty also scored in double-digits, tallying 10 points, four rebounds, and a steal. She made two three-point shots in the contest, bringing her season total to 48 which now ties her for seventh in three-pointers made in a single season.
Anna Scoblick added nine points to the total while also grabbing eight rebounds.Â
Sarah White was a distributor on defense as she has been all season long and came away with four steals. This moves her up to fifth all-time for steals in single-season steals with 76. She also poured in seven points, three assist, and three rebounds.Â
Freshman
Sofia Travieso had a career night in points, rebounds and steals in her 15 minutes. She recorded a career-high eight points, eight rebounds and four steals while also adding three assists. Fellow classmates
Ella Iacone, Sydney Hanley, and
Angelina Dragone also contributed minutes for the Cardinals. Dragone notched six points and three rebounds while Hanley knocked two buckets to tie her career high with four points.
The Cardinal season average is up to 75.9 points per game. If the high scoring continues, it would mark the highest scoring average for a season in program history.Â
Catholic has one more game left in the regular season before they host the Landmark Conference Tournament. The team will travel to Lycoming for the first time for a 4 p.m. contest against the Warriors.
