WILLIAMSPORT, PA. — The Catholic University women's basketball team concluded the regular season with an emphatic victory over Lycoming on Saturday afternoon.
After trailing by two points after the opening quarter of play, the Cardinals held the Warriors to just 27 points over the final 30 minutes of the contest to defeat Lycoming, 76-45.
Four of Catholic's five starters scored in double figures while Anna Scoblick contributed with nine points, nine rebounds, five assists, two blocks and one steal. Kerry Flaherty led the way with 16 points courtesy of four triples.
Matt Donohue's team played suffocating defense, causing 23 turnovers leading to 21 points. This allowed the Cardinals to get out on the break, opening up a decisive 17-2 edge in fast-break points. Alexa Kenah was big off the bench, leading the team with five steals while also chipping in with six rebounds, three points and two assists.
Emily Lockard led Lycoming in virtually every statistical category, logging a double-double with 21 points and 14 rebounds. She also went a perfect 5-for-5 from the free-throw line and registered three blocks.
The victory means that No. 10 Catholic finishes the regular season at a near-perfect 24-1 and 17-1 in conference play. The 24 wins are the second-most in program history behind the 2012-13 team that went 27-2.
Prior to the win, the Cardinals had already wrapped up its first Landmark Conference regular-season championship since 2016-17 when Catholic went 13-1 in conference play. With it, Catholic receives the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament and a first-round bye, and will host a semifinal this upcoming Thursday, Feb. 22, at 7:30 p.m. The Cardinals must wait until Tuesday night to learn their opponent as they will face the winner of the Susquehanna/Drew quarterfinal on Tuesday night.
