WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Cardinal offense continued to roll on Saturday as Catholic (7-6-3, 3-3-2) defeated Wilkes (4-10-3, 1-5-2) 4-0 at Carlini Field.
Isabel Doherty led the offense with her first career multi-goal game, giving her a team-high five goals on the season. Doherty scored in the ninth and 56th minutes, netting Catholic's second and fourth goals of the contest.
Joining her on the score sheet was Savannah Hensley and Emily Harkins who each scored their first career goals in the winning effort.
It was Hensley who put the Cardinals on top less than five minutes into the contest.
Sara Placide played the ball to her at the left edge of the box where Hensley snuck the ball past a defender and beat Wilkes keeper Delaney Yaracs with a big time strike. The assist was Placide's third of the year, giving her an assist in each of the last two contests.
After Doherty's ninth-minute goal, it was Harkins turn to get on the score sheet.
Avery Bowman played the ball to the top of the box for
Peyton Coron who headed it towards the right edge where Harkins was. After a misplay by the defender, Harkins found herself with space and beat Yaracs to make it 3-0. The assist was Coron's second of the year and first since the season-opener at Franklin & Marshall.
Doherty found the net once again in the 56th minute, scoring the lone goal of the second half. Defensively, Catholic didn't allow Wilkes to generate a ton of pressure, as
Ava Rieger had to make just two saves to earn career shutout number 22. With 10 clean sheets this season, she has tied Lexi Halperin's program record set back in 2014.
With just one conference game remaining, Catholic clinched its place in the Landmark Conference playoffs thanks to a Juniata loss at Moravian. Catholic can finish anywhere from the fourth to the sixth seed pending next Saturday's results.
The Cardinals will face Mary Washington for a mid-week non-conference tilt on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. Students with the best Halloween costumes can win prizes at the game!
