WASHINGTON, D.C. - A career performance from freshman
Laci Freitas pushed Catholic (13-14, 4-2) to victory over Elizabethtown (14-10, 5-3) on Friday night.
The Queens, N.Y. native recorded her third straight double-digit kill performance as she racked up a career-high 16 kills while hitting an impressive .351.
Erin Faughnan joined Freitas in double figures, adding 10 kills while hitting .360 in the win.
Despite leading 21-18 and 23-22, Catholic couldn't hold on to bring home the first set as Elizabethtown took a 1-0 lead after back-to-back attack errors from the Cardinals to end the set.
Catholic came out firing in the second set, jumping out to a 9-2 lead thanks to a balanced offensive attack and a strong showing at the net defensively. The Cardinals pushed the lead to 17-5 with a 6-0 run. A late run for the Blue Jays brought them within seven, but
Ava Borcky put away the winner to tie the match at 1-1.
The Cardinals jumped ahead once again in set three, taking a 10-3 lead after back-to-back Blue Jay errors. Both teams traded back-and-forth for the rest of the set before Catholic took the final three points for a 25-15 set victory as Borcky finished the set once again, this time with a block.
Déjà vu ensued as
Casey Burford's side took a 10-2 lead with
Grace Guerin providing a strong presence at the net. A run of
Kate Berra service aces pushed the lead to 16-6 before Elizabethtown raced back to pull within two. Freitas put down a big kill followed by a
Julia Raab kill to make it 22-18. After an attack error, Catholic ended the match with three straight kills from Raab and Faughnan.
In the match, the Cardinals recorded nine service aces to just one for the Blue Jays. Berra led the way with four of them. Catholic had 12 blocks and 97 digs in the match with Guerin continuing to be a force at the net. She set a new career-high with 97 blocks through 27 matches. Guerin is seven blocks away from sixth all-time in Catholic history.
Catholic returns to its home court tomorrow afternoon as it hosts Susquehanna and Christopher Newport for a tri-match.
