Cardinals Rout Gophers in Total Team Effort

WASHINGTON, D.C.
- Five different goal scorers pushed Catholic (6-6-3, 2-3-2) to a 6-0 victory over Goucher (3-9-4, 0-5-2) on Wednesday night at Carlini Field. Catholic's six goals are its most in a contest since a 6-0 victory at Juniata just over five years ago.

Peyton Coron put the ball into the back of the net twice, scoring Catholic's second and third goals of the contest to serve as the only Cardinal player with multiple goals in the outing. After scoring seven goals in 2023, Coron was held scoreless through 12 games before breaking through this evening.

Isabel Doherty, Ava Gregorio, and Alex Berish joined Coron to give the Cardinals a five-goal first half advantage. Kelsie Price would add the final Catholic goal of the night in the 75th minute to extend the lead to 6-0.

Defensively, the Cardinals allowed just one shot in the contest, a strike from Jordan Wood in the 70th minute that Ava Rieger corralled for her lone save of the day. The shutout is the 21st of Rieger's career, putting her second all-time in Catholic women's soccer history.

Eight different Cardinals were awarded an assist in the contest with Doherty, Gregorio, and Berish each adding an assist to go with a goal scored. Starters Savannah Hensley, Emily Harkins, and Sara Placide were awarded assists while Isabella DeAvila and AJ Hudock added assists off the bench.

Doherty opened the scoring just over 15 minutes into the contest. Coron played a great ball up the right flank, finding Harkins. The junior sent a low cross into the middle of the box where Doherty one-timed it into the back of the net for her third goal of the season.

Roughly nine minutes later, Hensley pushed the ball up the left side of the pitch, leaving the ball off near the top of the box before the Goucher defense closed out her space. Coron setlled the ball and ripped it into the net for her first goal of the day. She added her second less than three minutes later, scoring off a Catholic corner. Placide's corner found Berish's head which redirected the ball to Coron. Coron calmly settled and slotted it into the net for a 3-0 lead.

It didn't take long for Catholic to make it 4-0 as a short time later, Doherty played a beautiful ball to the near post from the top of the box where Gregorio got a boot to it, beating the Goucher keeper with ease. The final goal of the first half came in the final five minutes with Gregorio sending in a corner that skimmed over Goucher keeper Madison Gutierrez's head and leaving a gift in front of an empty net for Berish.

Price's second half goal came via another Catholic corner as DeAvila sent in a beautiful ball which Hudock flicked towards Price who finished her first career goal.

With tonight's victory and a Juniata draw versus Susquehanna, Catholic moves into sixth in the Landmark Conference table, putting them in position for a Landmark Tournament spot with two games to play.

Catholic hosts Wilkes on Saturday at 1 p.m. for a Landmark Conference contest.
