WASHINGTON, D.C. – Allison Flynn scored a hat trick for Catholic field hockey in its dominant 6-0 win over Lycoming on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals improved to 8-7 overall and remain undefeated in Landmark Conference play with a perfect 6-0 record.
The Cardinals put up an impressive performance on both ends of the field. They controlled the ball in their offensive zone for the majority of the game and did not allow Lycoming to get a shot off throughout the entire contest. The last time Catholic held a team to zero total shots dates back to 2018 when it shut out Moravian during a late October matchup.
Catholic held the advantage in shots (37-0), shots on goal (29-0), and penalty corners (16-4). Lycoming goalkeeper Isabella Bobe had a tremendous outing, saving 23 and contributing to multiple disrupted plays. However, the Cardinals were able to penetrate the defense early and break away with a large lead.
All six of Catholic's goals came in the first half. Flynn got things going with a slap shot from the right side four minutes in.
Molly Romano recorded the first assist of her career on the play, sending a solid pass into the zone for Flynn to finish.
Nancy McGettigan scored the other first-quarter goal for the Cardinals at the 12:44 mark. The senior swarmed to the ball after a saved shot got away from the Warriors' defense and was able to find the back of the cage for the third time this season.
In the second quarter, Flynn provided booked end goals to start and end the 15 minutes with
Niki Micciche and
Lauren Keast each adding one in between. Flynn's second goal of the afternoon came one minute and 38 seconds into the quarter. She took this one all by herself, dodging several defenders and weaving her way into position to strike from close range. Her third came 10 minutes later when she collected the ball off a
Mary Rojack shot that hit the post and capitalized on the second chance opportunity. Flynn now has four goals on the season and nine in her career.
Micciche continued to make history with her goal. She gathered a pass from Keast by the far post and tapped it in for the 35th of her career. The senior now ranks in a tie for ninth in program history in career goals alongside Colleen Harwood ('15) and Meredith Chandler ('11). She also moved into ninth all-time in career points, now with 81.
Keast joined the action with a goal of her own to round out the goal scorers for Catholic. She buried an unassisted shot into the right side of the cage for her sixth of the season. The sophomore has scored and provided an assist in each of the Cardinal's last three games.
Catholic's back line of
Emma Shallow, Liv Ingram, and
Sophia Conners rarely allowed the ball to cross into their defensive half. They extended pressure past midfield and made timely takeaways to quickly regain possession for their team each time Lycoming tried to initiate a break.
Caroline Caputo also made impressive contributions to the winning effort, putting one shot on goal and inserting a penalty corner.
The last time the Cardinals won by six or more goals was in 2022 when they defeated Drew by a score of 7-1.
Ella Bowman picked up her third shutout of the season.
The next contest for the Cardinals will take place on Tuesday, October 22 at 6 p.m. Catholic will welcome Goucher to D.C. as they continue Landmark Conference play.
