WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Catholic University women's basketball team rode a balanced team effort to its sixteenth-straight victory on Wednesday night, extending the program's longest winning run in its DIII history.
Five players scored in double figures as No. 9 Catholic bested Goucher, 95-53. For the second game in a row, sophomore Anna Scoblick notched a double-double, registering 12 points and 10 rebounds. She also led the way with seven assists, leaving her just three shy of a triple-double.
Fellow sophomore Amelia Kennedy led the way with 14 points. She shot 5-of-7 from the floor while converting all four of her free-throw attempts and grabbed six rebounds. Catholic shot an impressive 16-of-17 from the charity strip as a team.
Carly Mulvaney and Kerry Flaherty each registered 13 points while Kaleigh Beirne dropped 10, highlighted by a pair of and-ones in the third quarter. Sarah White produced in all areas of the game, registering nine points while leading the way with a staggering seven steals and pitching in with six boards.
Sophomore Tori Fernandez earned her first-career start on the night and began with a bang, knocking down a three on the first possession of the game. She finished with six points, four steals, four assists and two rebounds.
The Cardinals turned their suffocating defense directly to offense as Matt Donohue's team caused 24 turnovers that equated to a comprehensive 27-2 edge in fast break points. The Cardinals were especially effective in the first quarter, shooting over 61 percent from the floor to open up a 32-10 lead after just 10 minutes.
The Catholic pair of Sydney Hanley and Ella Iacone both registered their first-career points on the evening as Hanley knocked down a pair of field goals while Iacone got off the mark with an impressive and-one following a great back-door cut. Molly McLaughlin also registered four points while Sienna DeGross made her first appearance of the season, ripping down a pair of offensive rebounds.
Merci Turner dropped a game-high 17 points while also leading Goucher with eight rebounds. Maiya Villanueva added 11 and a showed off some impressive passing ability, registering four assists.
Catholic's 95 points on offense marks its most in a single game in more than a decade, dating back to Nov. 30, 2013, when the Cardinals defeated Carleton 105-84 in the Colorado College Thanksgiving Tournament.
Next up for Catholic will be a trip to Wilkes on Saturday. Opening tip is set for 4 p.m.
