PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - With a 70-49 victory over Juniata on Sunday afternoon at the historic Palestra, Catholic women's basketball is 15-0 for the first time in the Division III era. The Cardinals also improve to 8-0 in Landmark Conference play with the victory.
Sophomore
Anna Scoblick was dominant for the Cardinals, posting her second double-double of the season with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Scoblick was 5-5 in the second quarter with 11 of her game-high 20 as the Cardinals built an 11-point halftime advantage.
Carly Mulvaney started the game with a bang from three-point range, hitting two triples in the first three minutes of Sunday afternoon's contest. Mulvaney hit a mid-range jumper to put Catholic up 10-5 with 6:14 left in the first, giving her eight of the team's first 10 points.
Juniata tied the game at 10 with 5:26 left in the quarter before Sarah White hit the Cardinals' third three after a Keegan Douglas offensive rebound. Scoblick and Douglas followed with layups to give Catholic a 7-0 run and a 17-10 lead. The Eagles scored the next six points, trimming the lead to one before Amelia Kennedy knocked down two free throws to give the Cardinals a three-point advantage after 10 minutes of action.
Scoblick scored four of Catholic's first six points in the second as they built a 25-16 lead. Scoblick scored off a feed from Tori Fernandez with 2:22 left in the half and then followed a Juniata three with a three-point play of her own less than a minute later. Scoblick pulled down an offensive board and put it back in for her 10th and 11th points of the quarter to push the Cardinal lead into double figures before the half.
Catholic outscored Juniata 33-23 in the second half to finish off a 21-point win. Leading 37-31 with 8:23 to play in the third quarter, Catholic exploded with a 16-2 run, blowing the game open. Kennedy scored on a fastbreak layup after a White steal to push Catholic ahead by 20 for the first time with 2:19 left in the period.
In the fourth, Juniata trimmed the lead down to 15, but Kennedy scored off a Scoblick assist and Molly Aromando canned a corner three with 7:53 remaining to push the lead back to 20. A three from White gave the Cardinals their biggest lead of the game at 65-40 with 5:57 to play before closing out a 70-49 victory.
BY THE NUMBERS
- White and Mulvaney joined Scoblick in double figures with 13 and 10 points respectively. White added four assists, four rebounds, and five steals in a stat-stuffing performance from the Philadelphia native.
- Kennedy helped out with eight points, an assist, and a block in 15 strong minutes of action off the bench.
- Catholic's 15-game winning streak is the first for the program in the Division III era (dating back to 1981-82). The Cardinals had two prior 14-game winning streaks (2004-05 and 2012-13).
The Cardinals will host Goucher on Wednesday night at Franny Murray Court in a Landmark Conference tilt.
