TOWSON, Md. – Catholic senior cornerback
Aidan Long has been named Landmark Conference Defensive Player of the Week after helping the Cardinals to a 31-20 victory at SUNY Morrisville on Saturday afternoon.
Long finished the contest with three tackles, a pass break-up, and a 79-yard interception return for a touchdown.
With Morrisville driving late in the fourth quarter, down 24-20, quarterback Steven Frerichs tried to find hit his receiver on a hitch route on the Morrisville sideline. The ball bounded off the pass catcher's hands and into Long's, who took it up the sideline, avoiding one last would-be tackler inside the five for a score.
The interception return was Long's third defensive touchdown in the last two seasons after recording a fumble recovery for a touchdown and an interception return for a touchdown in back-to-back games against Randolph-Macon and Kean last season.
Long has come away with four turnovers (3 INT, 1 FR) in his career and has scored a touchdown on three of them.
The Garden City, N.Y. product is the first Catholic player to be named Defensive Player of the Week in the Landmark Conference.
Catholic returns home on Saturday as Alfred comes to Cardinal Stadium for a 1 p.m. tilt.
