Catholic Scores Twice In Final Two Minutes To Grab 31-20 Win at Morrisville

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. - Catholic football improved to 2-1 on the season after picking up a 31-20 road victory at SUNY Morrisville on Saturday afternoon. Playing the first-ever game on the highly publicized black turf at Drake Field, Mike Gutelius' squad scored a pair of touchdowns in the final two minutes to pick off a major non-conference road victory.

Preston Jeffrey caught three touchdowns to account for all of Catholic's offensive scoring while Aidan Long sealed the deal with a pick-six with less than a minute remaining.

Jeffrey finished the contest with 10 receptions for 93 yards and three scores from senior quarterback Madden Lowe. Lowe completed 37-of-45 passes for 226 yards and the three touchdowns while adding 33 yards on the ground as well.

Catholic trailed 20-17 with 12:05 remaining in regulation after SUNY Morrisville completed a 12-play, 75-yard drive with a Steven Frerichs one-yard touchdown. After a three-and-out on the ensuing drive, Catholic got the ball back with 8:51 remaining and went to work, grinding down the Mustangs defense and the clock.

Starting from the Catholic 17-yard line, Adam Shaker's offense executed a 16-play, 88-yard drive, chewing 6:51 off the clock before Lowe found Jeffrey for a 17-yard score to give the Cardinals a 24-20 lead.

Lowe completed back-to-back passes to Andrew Tabor to set up a third-and-one before keeping it for a four-yard gain and a first down. Three straight handoffs to Zach Williams resulted in 12 yards and another Catholic first down up to the 37-yard line. On fourth-and-two from their own 45, Lowe gave it to Williams who powered for the first down. A penalty set up a first-and-15 for Catholic, but Lowe found Jeffrey for a nine-yard gain. The Cardinals gained five yards on the next two plays to set up fourth-and-one from the Morrisville 44. Lowe kept it himself for a 17-yard pickup to set up first-and-10 from the 27. Cade Chrebet picked up 10 yards before Lowe found Jeffrey for the score and the lead.

Morrisville started to push the ball down the field as they moved to try and retake a late lead, but on third-and-five from the Catholic 36, Frerichs pass was intercepted by Long and returned 79-yards for the score. The defensive touchdown is Long's third in the past two seasons after returning a fumble and a pick for a touchdown last season.

Catholic scored the first touchdown of the game, putting together a drive similar to its last, trucking 76 yards across 14 plays to take a 7-0 lead as Lowe found Jeffrey for a four-yard touchdown.

Lowe's second touchdown pass of the day was an 18-yarder to Jeffrey to cap a seven-play, 38-yard drive early in the second quarter.
