BETHLEHEM, Pa. — The Catholic University men's tennis team fell to Moravian in a match that was tighter than the final score indicated on Saturday afternoon.
Despite falling 7-2, multiple matches ended in tiebreaks that went the way of the Greyhounds.
James Earwood and Diego Romo won their matches at No. 1 and No. 2 singles respectively after playing well. Earwood triumphed 6-3, 6-1 while Romo only dropped one game, winning 6-1, 6-0.
Romo was very close to making it two wins on the day but, combining with Matt Rudolf at the top doubles position, fell by a single mini-break in the tiebreak 8-7(6). Rudolf battled all day, falling at No. 3 singles in a marathon, three set affair. After taking the opening set, he dropped the second frame by a single break before falling in the third (6-2, 5-7, 2-6).
Ben Annunziato competed well at No. 5 singles, falling in a third-set breaker. He showed great poise after losing the first set to battle back in the second to force the tiebreak. Despite the loss, Annunziato has had a strong rookie campaign and boasts a cumulative singles record of 6-2.
With the loss, Catholic has been eliminated from postseason contention. In head coach Nate Farlow's first season at the helm, the Cardinals were able to challenge right down to the final day.
Catholic will look to see if it can reschedule the postponed non-conference match against Stevenson before calling its season over.
