SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. — The Catholic University women's golf team shot a team-681 to open its spring season with a victory at the PCT Spring Break Challenge on Wednesday afternoon!
Three Cardinals finished in the top five as the team edged Landmark Conference rivals Drew by five strokes.
Lauren Lombardo matched yesterday's round of 82 with another 10-over performance today to earn an outright second-place finish. Brooke Smith carded a day-two 86 (+14) to finish in solo fourth place (168, +24) while yesterday's outright leader, Lauren Wright, finished fifth with a two-day score of 170 (+26).
Drew made a run at Catholic, powered by Kayla Diaz who topped the individual leaderboard. The Rangers sat 16 strokes behind the Cardinals before teeing off today and closed the gap to just five strokes, but Ed Dolan's team was able to hold off their charge.
Diaz produced the round of the tournament today, shooting a three-over 75. Nyah Sanders also played well for Drew, shooting a 80 (+8) on the day to finish in solo third.
Avery Mrak also had a strong second day. She improved on her day-one number by three strokes to earn herself a top-10, carding a two-day 179 (+35) to finish in solo ninth.
Tyler Zierski matched her round of 93 yesterday to round complete scoring for the Cardinals.
Catholic will now take more than two weeks off before hosting its home event, the Cardinal Spring Classic. The two-day event will take place at Black Rock Golf Course on March 25 and 26.
