Red-Hot Shooting Propels Catholic to Victory Versus Roanoke

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Catholic men's basketball was red hot from distance, knocking down 20 triples in a 99-72 victory over Roanoke to conclude its 2023 slate on Wednesday evening. The Cardinals hit 25-of-38 threes across the two-day tournament, making 66 percent of its shots from three-point land. 

Five different Cardinals scored in double figures, led by 17 off the bench from Jake Timby. The senior guard hit five triples in 19 minutes. Tommy Kelly (15), Dan Buckley (14), CJ Ruoff (13), and Enzo Sechi (13) were also in double figures for Aaron Kelly's Cardinals. 

Catholic opened up a 25-point halftime lead thanks to a red-hot first half from the field. The Cardinals hit 20-of-28 shots while drilling 11 three-pointers en route to 54 points in the first 20 minutes of the contest to put the Maroons on their heels. 

Buckley was lights out in the first half, scoring all 14 of his points and handing out four assists without missing a shot. Kelly joined him in building Catholic's lead with 10 first-half points, missing just one shot over the first 20 minutes. 

Jesse Hafemeister and Brian Herbert each hit early threes as Catholic built a 10-2 lead in the first three minutes. Lead 18-7, Catholic went on an 18-0 run as a Kelly pull-up three gave the Cardinals a 36-7 edge with 9:47 to play in the first half. 

The Maroons cut the deficit back to 17 with 3:30 remaining in the first, but Buckley and Ruoff hit threes to push the lead back to 23 with 2:49 left. Buckley made it a 9-0 run with a three-point play to push Catholic ahead 52-26 before Max Rottmann ended the run with 20 ticks left on the clock. Timby scored just before the buzzer to send Catholic into the locker room with a 54-29 lead. 

Catholic held its biggest lead of the contest at 72-40 with 14:53 to play as Timby drilled a three off a Buckley assist. The Cardinals had six different players score off the bench for a combined 47 bench points. There was a combined 77 points scored off the bench between the Cardinals and the Maroons. 

Catholic led for all but 36 seconds and never trailed in Wednesday afternoon's contest. The 20 three-pointers made are the most by Catholic in at least a dozen years, surpassing 18 made three-pointers against Elizabethtown on January 5, 2016. Catholic's 67 percent shooting percentage from distance is its best single-game percentage since 2015 when the Cardinals hit 83.3 percent of their threes against Juniata. 

Catholic will enter the holiday break on a winning streak and will return to action on January 3 against Lycoming.
