Cardinals Knock Off 18th-Ranked Blue Jays in Overtime Thriller

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. - Catholic outscored 18th-ranked Elizabethtown 37-19 across the fourth quarter and overtime to pick up a 79-70 victory, improving the Cardinals to 6-0 on the season and 1-0 in Landmark Conference play. Elizabethtown entered Wednesday night's Landmark Conference season-opener ranked in the top 25 of both the WBCA and D3hoops.com polls while the Cardinals received votes in both after a 5-0 start.

Trailing 51-42 entering the fourth, Catholic trimmed the deficit to four points with a quick 7-2 run across the first 2:30. Kerry Flaherty knocked down a three and converted a layup off an Anna Scoblick feed while Scoblick scored off a pass from Carly Mulvaney to make it a 53-49 game with 7:34 left.

Summer McNulty scored to extend Elizabethtown's lead back to six with 5:04 to play, but Flaherty drained another three to get Catholic within a bucket. The Cardinals once again fell down by eight points with just 2:04 to play, but Catholic ended regulation on an 8-0 run to force an extra five minutes. Mulvaney and Flaherty both hit threes while Flaherty added a pair of free throws in between. Keegan Douglas had a look before the buzzer sounded, but was turned away, forcing overtime.

Catholic dominated the overtime period, outscoring the Blue Jays 12-2 over the final 2:19. Flaherty hit her fifth and final three of the contest to put Catholic ahead 70-68 before Mulvaney scored the final nine points as Catholic put away Elizabethtown.

The Cardinals got off to a red-hot start in the contest, leading 25-10 in the first quarter after a 19-4 run spanning more than six minutes. Catholic shot 56 percent in the first, taking a 25-17 lead after 10 minutes before the Blue Jays swung the game in their direction, outscoring the Cardinals 34-17 over the middle periods to take a nine point advantage into the fourth.

Catholic will ride its early-season wave of success to D.C. for the first time this season as the Cardinals host Wilkes on Saturday at 4 p.m.
