WASHINGTON, D.C - The Catholic University women's basketball team remains undefeated after a convincing 78-49 win over Wilkes on Saturday afternoon. 11 different Cardinals scored and 13 players saw the floor in the contest.
The scoring was well-rounded for the Cardinals with three of the five starters putting up double figures while the bench unit combined for 30 points.Â
Keegan Douglas led the way again, contributing 17 points in 33 minutes.
Anna Scoblick and
Carly Mulvaney each had 11 points and shot over 55% from the field in 17 and 23 minutes respectively.
Kaleigh Beirne came in hot off the bench to add 10 points and six rebounds of her own in 14 minutes of action.
The Colonels scored the first seven points of the contest off an opening three-pointer, a driving layup, and two free throws. The lead did not last long, however, as the Cardinals came storming back on a 19-2 run over the next seven-and-a-half minutes to take a 19-9 lead after the first quarter. Wilkes did not regain the lead again in the contest.Â
The second quarter saw back-and-forth action between both squads. Catholic forced seven turnovers and was rewarded with five fast break points in the period. They were effective when getting into the offense, scoring off a pair of set plays as
Amelia Kennedy and Mulvaney converted on back-to-back three point tries.Â
After the halftime break, foul trouble plagued both teams. The third quarter saw nineteen personal fouls called, causing 32 free throws to be taken. Both teams converted on 10 of their 16 attempts. Douglas got to the line multiple times and was the only Cardinal to be perfect from the line as she knocked down all six attempts.Â
Senior
Molly Aromando was key down the stretch, giving her team second chances with three offensive rebounds and five total. She also had five points and added an assist.Â
Freshman
Angelina Dragone scored four points in her fifth collegiate contest and provided the Cardinals with much needed size against a Wilkes front line that included 6-3 Erin Shober. Fellow classmates
Sofia Travieso and
Molly McLaughlin also saw game action and each grabbed a rebound for the Cardinals. Â
Today's contest was the first Landmark Conference meeting between the teams with the Colonels being a recent addition to the Landmark Conference. The two squads will face off again in late January in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania.Â
Catholic will remain home for their next contest against a tough Susquehanna squad on Wednesday, December 6. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
