ASHLAND, Va. — The Catholic University women's basketball team continued its strong start to the 2023-24 campaign on Saturday afternoon, dispatching Randolph-Macon comfortably.
Catholic flew out of the gates, opening up a 20-12 lead after one quarter of play. Matt Donohue's women then put up 20 again in the second quarter, outscoring the Yellow Jackets 20-9 in that stanza to take an impressive 40-21 lead into the break and would never look back.
Keegan Douglas set the tone with a layup off of the opening tip and, after a steal by Anna Scoblick on Catholic's first defensive possession, it looked like the Cardinals may pull away early. But back-to-back threes from Juliana Park offered an immediate response and pushed Randolph-Macon out to an early 6-4 lead.
From there, Catholic allowed just four points over the next 11 minutes of game time and went on a 20-6 run to seize control. Catholic shot 44 percent from the field in the first half and 46.7 percent from beyond the three-point line.Â
It was a day to remember for Sarah White who went for 16 points to post a new career high. The senior also added three rebounds and three steals.
Douglas led the way again for Catholic as she has in each of the teams first four games with 17 points in 36 minutes. Carly Mulvaney was also in double figures with 13 and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.
Tori Fernandez played well off of the bench, contributing with eight points on 3-of-6 shooting. The sophomore canned two threes and grabbed three rebounds as well.
Catholic will return to the court in Ashland tomorrow for its second of two matches at the RMC Tip-Off Challenge. The Cardinals will battle Shenandoah at 2 p.m.
