26 Unanswered Points Leads Catholic To First-Ever Landmark Win

LA PLUME, Pa. - Catholic football overcame a 14-0 deficit to snap a four-game losing skid and pick up its first-ever Landmark Conference victory, 26-14, over Keystone on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals put up nearly 500 yards of total offense in the victory as they improve to 3-5 on the season.

Zach Williams had a career day on the ground for Catholic, rushing for 124 yards and two touchdowns while Madden Lowe threw for 307 yards and two scores of his own.

Keystone scored on back-to-back possessions, getting the first points of the game on a 27-yard strike from Donald Leach II to Jayson Nami with 3:58 remaining in the opening quarter. Catholic responded with a 13-play drive, but Keystone took back possession after a missed field goal. The Giants traversed 80 yards across 13 plays to go up 14-0 with a Chanz Stevens four-yard touchdown run.

That was the last time Keystone would add to its point total, going scoreless over the final 38:12 as Catholic began a run of 26 straight points on the ensuing drive.

Starting on its own 39-yard line, Williams started the drive on the right foot with an 11-yard pickup to put the ball at midfield. Two plays later, on third-and-six, Lowe hit Malachi Hansen for an 11-yard gain, keeping the drive alive and setting up Catholic on the Keystone 35. A personal foul against the Giants put the Cardinals in the red zone four plays before Williams burst into the end zone from 10 yards out to narrow the deficit to 14-7.

Both teams traded punts before Keystone nearly put three more points on the board just before half, but Jeremiah Ortiz's 36-yard field goal was no good, sending Catholic into the locker room down 14-7.

Catholic was masterful on the opening drive of the second half, traveling 84 yards on 15 plays across 5:24 to tie the game at 14 on a four-yard touchdown reception from John Maynes, his fifth of the year. The Cardinals picked up chunk after chunk on the drive, starting with an 11-yard completion to Maynes followed by a nine-yard scamper from Williams. Lowe hit Anthony Giordano for 13 yards on second-and-nine to push Catholic into Giants' territory. After a handful of short pickups, Lowe found Nathan Miscichowski for 19 yards on second-and-10 from the Keystone 32. Lowe connected with Maynes for 18 yards after a holding penalty pulled Catholic back to the 23-yard line. Two plays later, Lowe found Maynes for the touchdown.

After three straight punts, Catholic finally took the lead as Williams plunged into the end zone for the second time with 1:42 remaining in the third quarter. Earlier in the drive, Lowe found Preston Jeffrey for a 32-yard score, but an offensive pass interference penalty negated the touchdown and pulled the Cardinals back near midfield. The duo connected for 17 yards on third-and-20 setting up a five-yard toss from Lowe to Nole Henry on fourth-and-three from the Keystone 30. Lowe hit Sam Cornacchione for 15 yards to put the Cardinals inside-the-five before Williams' score gave Catholic a 20-14 lead.

Catholic's final scoring drive might've been the the team's best as Adam Shaker's offense gained 95 yards on 13 plays, chewing 4:56 off the clock. Lowe found Ryan Smyth for a one-yard score to put the Cardinals ahead 26-14 with 8:51 remaining. Backed up at its own four, Lowe found Jeffrey for 23 yards to create some breathing room for the offense. On third-and-eight from the 29, Lowe took off, scrambling for 11 yards and a first down to keep the drive alive. A personal foul gave Catholic a second-and-25 from its own 25, but Lowe found Hansen for 18 yards to create a manageable third down situation. Lowe connected with Maynes for 16 yards and a first down, putting the Cardinals into Keystone territory. Back-to-back big gainers followed as Lowe hit Henry for 23 yards before connecting with Smyth for a 16-yard pickup to the two-yard line. Two plays later, Lowe hit Smyth for his first career touchdown.

Defensive Coordinator Brandon Beech's defense forced punts on all four of Keystone's full second-half drives, holding the Giants in check as Catholic mounted its comeback.

Defensively for Catholic, Luke Brautigan led the team with 10 tackles and a pair of TFLs. Lawson Haylock also added two TFLs for the Cardinals while Maynes added a fumble recovery and Jack Baldridge forced a fumble in the contest.

Statistically, Mike Gutelius' squad dominated the contest, besting Keystone in first downs (32-19), rushing yards (191-90), passing yards (307-228), total yards (498-318), total plays (89-57), and time of possession (35:51-24:09).
