TOWSON, Md. — The Catholic University Volleyball team traveled north for a conference battle with Goucher on Tuesday night, dispatching the Gophers in straight sets.
It was another big night for reigning Landmark Conference Athlete of the Week Olivia Blondin who posted 14 kills to take her over 800 for her career. This also marks her eighth-straight match with 12 or more kills.
Catholic overcame a four-point Goucher run to begin the opening set, 25-17. Erin Faughnan got the Cardinals going with two early kills before producing a brilliant run on the service line to push Heather Stout's team toward a first-set victory. She took over down 4-5 and pushed the Cardinal advantage to 10-5 with a 6-0 run that included two aces.
Catholic cruised in the middle set, getting out to a 10-1 lead and never looking back. After a quiet first set by her standards, the second frame is where Blondin came alive, posting five kills. She bettered her numbers in the closing frame, producing seven kills and was also responsible for an 8-0 run at the service line. The senior also led the Cardinals in digs with 15 to solidify a double-double.
Despite the monster performance from Blondin, it was a true team effort. Sydney Sheppard posted 25 assists while Gaby Hernandez-Ferraiuoli produced 12 digs and Izzy Steinberg also made six digs.
Freshman Vivian O'Brien had a big day as well, posting a career-high five kills. She hit .625 on the night while Blondin swung .367, just a few ticks higher than Grace Guerin at .364.
With the victory, Catholic moves to 18-8 on the season and 5-2 in Landmark Conference play. The victory pushes them into third place in the conference with two Landmark matches remaining.
It will be a pivotal weekend in regards to seeding in the conference tournament as Catholic will travel to Lycoming on Friday night before continuing on Huntingdon, Pa., to do battle with defending National Champions Juniata on Saturday.Â
