Cardinals Roll To Victory Over Wilkes

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Senior Olivia Blondin continued her standout campaign, recording 19 kills to lead the Cardinals to a 3-1 victory over Wilkes on Saturday afternoon. Catholic improves to 17-8 on the season and 4-2 in Landmark Conference play.

Blondin hit .265 in the match, recording her seventh straight game with at least 12 kills. Blondin has tallied 132 kills over that seven match span, leaving her just two kills shy of 800 for her career.

Blondin was joined on the attack by Tanya Sichling and Halie Murphy who recorded 13 and 11 kills respectively. Murphy went over 300 kills for the season, now sitting with 307, a new career-high. Grace Guerin followed up a strong Friday night, hitting .353 with eight kills and three solo blocks in the victory. On the defensive end, Gaby Hernandez-Ferraiuoli logged 15 digs while Blondin chipped in with 13.

The first set saw eight ties and three lead changes with Catholic pulling away late with a 6-2 run before ultimately ending the match by taking 12 of the final 16 points. Blondin recorded seven of her 19 kills off the jump, hitting .357 in the set while Sichling was ruthlessly efficient on the right side with five kills on 10 swings. Blondin had back-to-back kills to put the Cardinals ahead 16-15 and 17-15 before adding three more to extend Catholic's lead to 21-17. The Cardinals closed out a 25-18 set victory.

Catholic picked up right where it left off, taking the second set 25-14 with just two lead changes. Sichling added four more kills in the set as Catholic used a 7-0 run to jump ahead 19-10, ultimately putting the Colonels away to go up 2-0.

Set number three was all Wilkes as they led the whole way, taking a 25-20 set victory to extend the match. The Cardinals pulled within two at multiple points, but the Colonels fought them off with crucial side-outs. Alexis Reedy and Jenna Baron logged the final two points for Wilkes.

Heather Stout's team responded by leading the whole way in a 25-22 fourth set victory to clinch the match and pick up win number 17 on the year. Murphy and Blondin combined for nine kills in the final set as Catholic led 15-6 before fighting off a late Wilkes rally.

Catholic will take on Goucher on Tuesday in a match previously scheduled for October 10. Opening serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Decker Sports & Recreation Center.
