WESTMINSTER, Md. — The Catholic University women's soccer team dropped a road contest to McDaniel on Wednesday afternoon.

Freshman Ava Rieger was a standout performer for the Cardinals, saving a McDaniel penalty in the 64th minute. The freshman dove brilliantly to her right, pushing Jessica Weinoldt's strike just past the right post.

Rieger made eight saves, including a stunning right-handed tip over the bar to deny Keyla Velazquez on a breakaway just before halftime.

Catholic fell behind in the 20th minute when Taylor Clawson held off a defender in the box before laying the ball off to Abby Witzel, who curled home from just beyond the penalty spot. The Green Terror doubled its lead five minutes later, when an attacker tapped in a rebound after a stellar reaction save by Rieger.

Following a very strong performance against Scranton on Saturday, freshman Ava Gregorio started her career match and looked bright. She took on two shots and tested Katherine Carstensen in the McDaniel goal once while playing from a wide position.

Lauren Cerda, Liz Gorman and Kiera Price all came off the bench and put efforts on target.

The Cardinals now turn their attention to conference rival Drew. Catholic will travel to Madison, N.J., to face the Rangers on Saturday, with kickoff slated for 4 p.m.
