Cardinals Secure Top Seed Headed Into Landmark Tourney with Draw Against Scranton

WASHINGTON, D.C.
– The Catholic women's soccer team secured the number one seed heading into the Landmark Conference Tournament after pulling out a draw against Scranton.

Emma Antonetti put the Cardinals on the board first, securing a much needed early lead. In the 30th minute of the game, Nina Markie dribbled the ball to the mid line then powered a pass forward. Antonetti pushed herself forward, passing defenders on her way to the ball, and collected it just outside the box. Scranton's goalkeeper Makenzie Van Arsdale came out of goal to defend Antonetti, who then saw the opportunity to strike. Her shot sailed into the back of the net, giving Catholic the 1-0 lead.

Scranton recorded three shots and two corners in the remaining fifteen minutes of the half, but the Lauren Creamer and Cardinal were able to keep the Royals at bay at the halftime whistle.

In the ninth minute of the second half, the Royals earned themselves a penalty kick when one of their own was fouled inside the box. Scranton's Jenna Borelli stepped up to the line to take, shooting low right. Her kick went just out of reach of Creamer, tying the game up at one apiece.

Catholic tried to answer in the following minutes, but were unable to put the ball into the back of the net. Scranton also tested Catholic, tallying four shots and earning two corners. The Cardinals earned a corner in the 89th minute of play, but were unable to pull ahead, resulting in the 1-1 draw.

Despite not coming away with a win, the Cardinals clinched the one seed headed into the Landmark Tournament with today's outcome. The Cardinals previously secured a First Round bye.
