Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Catholic University field hockey team dropped a tight affair to Christopher Newport, 1-0, on Wednesday night.
The lone goal came in the first quarter, when Delaney Norr got her stick to the ball at the back post to redirect a driven cross from the right side. Abby Asuncion provided the cross and Morgan Arthur got a slight touch before Norr provided the all-important one just under 10 minutes into the contest.
The Cardinals, playing their third game in Cardinal Stadium in the last seven days, were unable to muster much going forward. They were outshot 17-7 and did not register a shot in the first half.
They did, however, come out of the halftime interval energized, providing their best spell of the game in the third quarter. Following a Kellie Caputo penalty corner five minutes into the second half, both Mary Parker and Molly McEvoy forced back-to-back saves out of Lily Kerr in the Christopher Newport goal. The Cardinals outshot the Captains 5-4 in the third stanza.
The Cardinals pushed hard for an equalizer but were unable to test Kerr in the final quarter as both of their shots flew wide of the Captain cage.
Freshman goalkeeper Abigail Kearney made seven saves in the contest.
Catholic now turns its attention to conference play when the Cardinals travel to Scranton. The Cardinals and the Royals will do battle this Saturday, Sept. 24, at 1 p.m.
