Box Score ARLINGTON, Va. – A 75th-minute finish from junior Gordie Bernlohr was the difference on Wednesday night as the Catholic University men's soccer team picked up a 2-1 road victory at Marymount (Va.).
Bernlohr struck with his team-leading sixth goal of the season nearly 30 minutes into the second half to take back the lead for Catholic (4-0-3). After a throw-in on the far sideline, senior Darius Siahpoosh turned up field, dribbling for the goal line before leaving it off for a Bernlohr finish.
The Cardinals jumped on top of Marymount (3-3-0) in the 36th minute of Wednesday night's Pope's Cup tilt with Siahpoosh starting the scoring off. Sophomore Lorenzo Carletti played a spectacular cross into the heart of the box, finding the head of Siahpoosh who headed it past the keeper for his fifth goal of the campaign.
The Saints tied the contest late in the first half after a Catholic miscue just shy of midfield. The Cardinals gave the ball up, giving the Saints numbers and allowing Brandon Loarte to play Chris Mendoza into space. Mendoza fired from just inside the 18, beating senior Austin Coron for Marymount's lone goal of the contest.
Both teams tallied four shots on goal for the match, giving Coron three saves and Marymount's Bayron Banegas a pair. The Saints led the way in shots 13-8 and corners 8-5.
With their efforts tonight, both Bernlohr and Siahpoosh are over 10 points for the season with Bernlohr holding the team lead with 13. Coron earns his second win this season, matching fellow senior Troy Young.
